A mirror on a direct-drive high quality stepper motor using
half-stepping, i bet you could get 1000 measurements in one sweep.

Maybe some nice gearing could give you another order of magnitude.

As for speed, I have no idea.

Sampling rate on a COTS laser range finder, anyone?
