Here's the PDF and code for Atmel's app note on a soft half-duplex  
uart that doesn't use timers:

Jon's example looks pretty good, too.  To fill in the delay routine  
use the one from the avr-libc library:

         #define F_CPU 1000000UL
	#include <util/delay.h>
	void _delay_us(double __us)
