One aspect of ROS that bears mentioning is the ability to do distributed 
processing. You could network a batch of Raspberry Pis all of them 
running ROS. They would exchange information using the same method as 
used between ROS modules running on a single processor. For example, you 
could dedicate a Pi to vision processing while another Pi is handling 
motor drivers, servo positioning, and other GIO. Another Pi might be 
collecting Neato LIDAR data while another is doing the planning processing.

One of the competitors, a high school team (!), used this approach at 
the NASA Sample Return Robot challenge.

So you do not need a big, fast Linux machine to run ROS. You can use a 
batch of smaller processing boards.
